Program Description:
Sex & Gender in the City: Barcelona (1 credit)
  • Tentative dates: June 6-15, 2018
  • Application deadline: February 16, 2018
This course will examine the gendered dimensions of cities and how public architectural structures, landscapes, and private spaces come to be encoded with gendered meanings. We will examine how space and place influence literary characters’ sexuality and performance of gender.  The goal of this program is to allow students to become familiar with Barcelona’s urban landscape, from an intersectional point of view. Students will learn about major architectural gems dating from the 4th century to the present day, many mentioned in the literature and film studied. As they learn about Barcelona’s growth into a modern city, students will also gain familiarity with the city’s role during the Spanish Civil War and Franco dictatorship. Finally, students will learn about the “Barcelona model” of the 1980s and 1990s; and they will learn about how immigration has influenced the urban landscape. Again, all of this will be done from an intersectional point of view: one that keeps at the forefront citizens’ identities, including their gender, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, and social class, among other issues.
