Contest Guidelines

The Office of International Programs and Extended Studies (OIP&ES) will accept photographs taken by current Ithaca College students while studying abroad, as well as photographs taken by international students in their home countries, while studying abroad, or in the US.
There are three categories you may submit photos under:

  1. People
  2. Places
  3. Olympic Colors (special category - see below)

The photos must be original and must be taken by the student submitting them for the contest.  We can accept only one entry per category, per student for the contest (one entry for People; one entry for Places; and one entry for Olympic colors).  All photos must be submitted to the OIP&ES on paper or on photo paper.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept electronic submissions for this competition.  In addition, we prefer photos that are 5x7 or 8x10.  If your photo is not 5x7 nor 8x10, we will still do our best to display it, so please submit it.
(Note: Although we do ask for you to upload electronic copies of the photos you plan to enter into the contest, these are only used for identification purposes.  You must still submit a physical photo to OIP&ES by the deadline in order to participate in the contest.)
Your submission of a photo for this contest certifies your permission to the OIP&ES to exhibit the photo during the week of the contest, and if your photo wins an award, you grant the OIP&ES permission to display your photo in our office and in other areas of campus, as well as to feature it online (on our website and on Facebook).  If you would like to get your photo back, you are responsible for coming to the OIP&ES to collect it before November 30, 2016 (unless your photo wins an award and is selected for display at the OIP&ES until the end of December – in this case, you can collect it by January 31, 2017).  We cannot be responsible for photos after these dates.

Submission deadline
The entries must be submitted to the Office of International Programs (we are located on the second floor of Job Hall) by 5 pm on Wednesday, October 26, 2016.  When turning in the photo, please also complete the Contest Submission Form by clicking on the Register/Apply button above, so we know who you are and we have information about your photo entry.  We cannot process photos without a completed Contest Submission Form.

The contest entries will be judged by popular vote: all visitors to the International Photo Exhibit will be invited to submit their vote for the best photo in each of the categories of the contest.  Votes will be received until the closing of the Exhibit at 3 pm on November 4.  Only voting ballots which are completely filled out will be considered for the judging.  Multiple or incomplete entries will be removed.  First ($100), Second ($50), and Third ($25) prizes will be awarded in each of the three categories (People, Places, and Light).

In addition to the popular vote, all photos in the exhibit will be considered for the Photo Merit Awards.  A professor from the Department of Cinema and Photography will review all photos in the exhibit and will select the best photos.

Special photo contest category: Olympic colors
In honor of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, our special category theme for our 2016 Photo Contest and Exhibition will be the official Olympic rings colors: blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Every flag in the world includes one of the following colors and each color represents a different part of the world. We will be looking for photos where one or more of the official Olympic colors are the focus.

Please share your photos from your travels or stays around the world. We are looking forward to seeing them!
Alum Submissions: the IEW Photo Exhibit welcomes photos taken by IC international student alums and study abroad alums, as well as IC faculty and staff who have traveled.  Please contact if you are interested in submitting your photos to be exhibited during IEW.
